Prices do not include lunch (except picnic lunches) or dinner unless otherwise stated. City Walking Tour prices include all entrance fees, a choice of snack, and native British Mandarin-speaking guides throughout your tour. Lunch and dinner are not included on City Walking Tours unless otherwise stated.
  • Weather

British weather. Sometimes it’s good, sometimes it’s bad, and sometimes it’s both at the same time. The point is that it’s constantly changing, so we can always count on a change for the better! We will run our tours in wind, rain or shine, but will always adjust itineraries to ensure you have the most enjoyable experience possible. For this reason, we only run our hiking tours from March until October. That said, if you want a truly authentic trip around Britain, embracing good and bad weather is very much part of the package!

Tour Timings

  • Meeting Points and Start Times

All of our itineraries begin at 9am from a specified train station (usually the nearest major station to the first stop on our tour). If you wish to meet later, at a different location, or even at your hotel, please let us know when enquiring. We will happily adjust the itinerary to accommodate your needs, although this may require small changes to the activities available. If you are travelling from afar but would like to keep the itinerary as it is, we can help you arrange accommodation near the tour start point for the night before. When you book a tour with us you will receive an information pack with everything you need to know about your meeting point and start time.
  • Delays

We put a lot of thought into our itineraries to ensure you get the most out of your time on tour. However, sometimes things beyond our control can cause delays and this can lead to last-minute alterations in your tour itinerary.

Transport

  • Trains

Trains We can help you arrange your train travel to our tour meeting points. All of the stations we use have direct train links to and from London as well as most major cities in Britain, so it easy for you to get to us, no matter where you are coming from. At the end of the tour, we will drop you back at the station no less than 45 minutes before your scheduled train departure, so as to ensure you have enough time to catch your return train.
  • Transport and Luggage

Transport on tours is by people-carrier or minibus, depending on the number in your group. The vehicles we use are of a high standard and have enough space for one large suitcase and one piece of hand luggage per person. You can find more information about what to bring on your tour under the ‘Our Tours’ page and in the information pack you receive on booking with us.
  • Driving and Travel sickness

All of our tours involve transport in vehicles at some point, sometimes along narrow, winding roads in the hills or mountains. If you are prone to travel sickness, please let us know in advance and bring the necessary medication. Please also be aware that some of our tours involve boat trips and may not be suitable for those with motion sickness.

Accommodation

We personally search the country for accommodation that has typically British character, great service and is of an appropriate standard to suit your needs. Below you’ll find a description of the three tiers of accommodation we offer. All accommodation is subject to availability and once you send us an enquiry, we can give you a detailed description, and photos, of what’s available.
  • Castles, Country Houses and Luxury Hotels

If selecting this option, you might be staying in a prestigious country house or a castle nestled amidst spectacular scenery. We have also sourced the finest 4- and 5- star luxury hotels for you to choose from. This option is our most expensive, which means you will be staying in accommodation of the highest standards. Prices range from approximately £100 to £500 per person per night depending on your chosen accommodation, and private hire of your own country house may also be available.
  • Bed & Breakfast and Local Inns

If selecting this option, you will be staying in typically British accommodation, of a 3- or 4-star standard. Bed and Breakfasts (known as B&Bs) provide cosy and homely accommodation and breakfast within houses around the UK, with the owners of the B&Bs often living in the same building. They are renowned for their warm welcomes, cosy atmospheres and great breakfasts, and the experience is often the closest you can get to staying in a British person’s house. Alternatively, you can spend the night in a traditional British Inn, where comfortable rooms are located in authentic British pubs, a hugely important aspect of British culture where people meet to drink, talk, socialise and eat home-cooked food. Both of these options will immerse you in British life, and it is often the way British people like to travel when holidaying in the UK. Prices range from approximately £30 up to £75 per person per night, depending on your chosen accommodation.
  • Hostels

This option is most appropriate for those travelling on a budget. Beds in shared dormitories are the most common form of accommodation in youth hostels, but private rooms are also available for a higher price. Hostels usually have a very lively and friendly atmosphere; in fact staying in a hostel is a very communal experience, with numerous social areas available to relax in and meet people from all over the world. Kitchens are available for your own use and some hostels will have their own restaurant serving food to guests. Note that breakfast may not be provided in some hostels, but can be arranged upon request, or prepared by you in the hostel’s facilities. Prices range from approximately £15 up to £30 per person per night depending on your chosen accommodation.

Food

We like to offer the best available British food on our tours, but please let us know if you would prefer to eat Chinese food and we will do our best to accommodate. Please also let us know in advance if you have any specific dietary requirements.
  • Breakfast

In Britain we have a saying, “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day”, and so we always allow at least one hour for it. On our tours, breakfast times will vary depending on the accommodation you choose, but we generally aim to set off on our day of touring at 9am, and sometimes as early as 8am on our hiking tours, which means breakfast will usually be taken between 7am and 9am. What you have for breakfast is largely up to you, most of our accommodation choices offer a Western breakfast selection, but some can provide Chinese breakfast options with advance notice. Specific dietary requirements can also be accommodated for if we are notified at the time of booking.
  • Lunch and Dinner

Lunch and dinner meal times will vary from tour to tour, but we generally aim to eat lunch at 12pm or 1pm, and dinner at 6pm or 7pm. You always have the option of eating with or without your guide, and he/she is expected to cover their own costs (with the exception of picnics which are made for the guide and group to enjoy together). Should you choose to eat with your guide, they will book a local restaurant in advance and can point out some great regional dishes to try. Should you choose to dine alone as a group, your guide can recommend the best places to eat, and you are free to explore independently. Of course if you would like to have Chinese food, we can also show you to the nearest Chinese restaurant if there is one in the area.
